ENGLISH 1AS SPRING 2022
Section 6216
Professor Rose Ann Cerofeci
rcerofeci@elcamino.edu
Welcome to English 1AS! I'm really glad that you are here and will have the opportunity to get extra practice and support!
This class is linked with English 1A section 6116. All students must be enrolled in BOTH sections. English 1A & 1AS work together. English 1AS is a support class, and will NOT be given a letter grade, but will be graded on completion of assignments resulting in a Pass or No Pass.
To begin, complete the Introduction to Canvas module to familiarize yourself with this system.
Our class is asynchronous, so all of your work will be done online. If you are struggling to get online, please send me an email immediately and then contact the ITS Help Desk. You will want to check canvas daily and complete the assignments posted in each module. Almost ALL of the work will be in the English 1A shell, but you will have weekly assignments here too.
This shell contains self-paced lessons to help you improve your grammar and writing. You must complete all of the modules and quizzes by the end of the semester. I will provide you with suggested pacing and check in to make sure that you don't get too far behind.
You will also be submitting drafts for all of our essays in this shell. The drafts are an opportunity to receive feedback from me or our tutor before submitting a final copy. This will really help to improve your grade in English 1A.
Contact & Office Visits
Please feel free to contact me at any time. You can send me a message through Canvas or email me at the address listed above. I will return emails within 48 hours (or sooner).
Office hours will be scheduled as needed. You are welcome to contact me for one-on-one conferencing at any time; I will send you a personal zoom link for our agreed upon meeting time. In addition, I will add “drop-in” office hours during the semester to provide additional support for assignments.
I strongly encourage you to reach out and connect through office hours. It is during this time that we can work one-on-one to achieve success!
Texts & Materials
Everything you need will be posted in this shell! All you have to do is work through the modules and submit drafts (when assigned). The modules include quizzes and they will help you grow as a reader and writer. Drafts will be given feedback so you can improve on your essays before final submissions.
This class is a win-win! If you do the work, you will get better. There is no letter grade, so there isn't much pressure! It si all for your personal growth as a student and to help your 1A grade improve.
Course Description
This is a supplemental writing course taught in conjunction with English 1A. Students receive instruction in the basic elements of the college essay and receive additional support for topics covered in English 1A.
Course Objectives
- Apply writing process strategies, especially those related to prewriting, drafting, and revision, with the goal of composing thesis-driven essays
- Utilize reading strategies for analyzing and interpreting texts, with the goal of understanding a writer's point, the relationship between the main ideas and supporting details, and the significance of the issues, ideas, and points the author is attempting to convey
- Apply research and information literacy skills with the goal of effectively integrating outside sources into academic writing, while utilizing MLA conventions of documentation
- Employ strategies for revising sentence-level grammar and usage errors
- Demonstrate metacognition concerning successful reading and writing processes
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will:
- Complete a research-based essay that has been written out of class and undergone revision. It should demonstrate the student's ability to thoughtfully support a single thesis using analysis and synthesis.
- Integrate multiple sources, including a book-length work and a variety of academic databases, peer-reviewed journals, and scholarly websites. Citations must be in MLA format and include a Works Cited page.
- Demonstrate logical paragraph composition and sentence structure. The essay should have correct grammar, spelling, and word use.
- Revise essay drafts based on feedback from others.
- Comprehend and analyze non-fiction college-level texts.
Attendance
Students are expected to check Canvas daily and complete all assignments. Students who miss too many assignments may be dropped by the instructor. However, students are responsible for dropping a class within the deadlines published in the class schedule. Students who stop participating but do not drop may receive a failing grade.
I realize that you may run into challenges during these difficult times. Therefore, in order to serve you equitably during these times, communication will be more important than ever. You must remain in constant communication so that I can work with you on a case-by-case basis should a need arise. Check your ECC email, Canvas inbox, and Canvas announcements often, and write to me whenever you have a question or concern. You also must remain vigilant in utilizing any of our numerous ECC campus resources, which are designed to help you succeed. I will do my best to help put you in touch with those services. A list of resources is below:
Assignments & Grading Scale
English 1AS is a Pass / No Pass course. You will earn credit for this part of the course by actively working on the modules and the course material from the linked English 1A course. This will primarily consist of drafting essays and other support assignments. Points will be assigned accordingly and will be assessed on completion and accuracy.
You will need 70% or better to receive a Pass in this course.
Late Assignments and Make-up Tests
Late assignments and make-up exams will be granted on a case-by-case basis. That means, you must discuss it with me and get approval. You will be given a reasonable time to complete work (based on the individual circumstance). The most critical component is communication. If you are struggling to complete an assignment, you must discuss it with me in a timely manner and together we will create a workable solution.
Students with Disabilities:
It is the policy of the El Camino Community College District to encourage full inclusion of people with disabilities in all programs and services. Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations in this class should contact the campus Special Resource Center (310) 660-3295, as soon as possible. This will ensure that students are able to fully participate.
Academic Honesty and Plagiarism:
El Camino College places a high value on the integrity of its student scholars. When an instructor determines that there is evidence of dishonesty in any academic work (including, but not limited to cheating, plagiarism, or theft of exam materials), disciplinary action appropriate to the misconduct as defined in BP 5500 may be taken. A failing grade on an assignment in which academic dishonesty has occurred and suspension from class are among the disciplinary actions for academic dishonesty (AP 5520). Students with any questions about the Academic Honesty or discipline policies are encouraged to speak with their instructor in advance.
Child Abuse / Gender-Based or Sexual Misconduct:
You should know that if you reveal child abuse, child neglect, or gender-based or sexual misconduct (including harassment, sexual assault, stalking, or intimate partner violence) to any instructor, we are required by law to report the problem to the Office of Staff and Student Diversity. However, psychologists are not required to report your incident. To speak confidentially with a psychologist, contact the Student Health Center for an appointment: 310.660.3643.
