Final Project:

Purpose: Now it is time for you to demonstrate your understanding of the 5 basic information literacy concepts by utilizing one of the 5 information literacy activities. See below for detailed instructions. This is an important assignment, as you will be using these 5 literacy concepts as a life long learner in the workforce, at home, community service, and in conversations amongst friends. This project fulfills the following course objectives:

  1. By the end of the course students will be able to Identify the 5 basic concepts in the information literacy processes, (1) identify, (2) find, (3) evaluate, (4) apply, and (5) evaluate.

Instructions:

  1. Identify the database include the name and link.
  2. Identify the information literacy activity by title as listed in the last module.
  3. Identify one scholarly article as the final step of this process.
  4. Show step by step how you were able to identify the scholarly article.
  5. As part of number 4 right above you are to include any refining features you used to qualify your results and locate your scholarly article. Refer to instructors “How To Refine and Cite” video from week 3. Include where to find the citation.

If you haven’t already, please review the second to the last module in your canvas shell "Information Literacy Activities" and identify which activity you’ve chosen at the beginning of the semester. This is the activity that you will be using for the final project. The example of activities is as follows:

  1. Hierarchical Reference.
  2. Mind Mapping.
  3. Topic Finder.
  4. Building an Algorithm.
  5. Learning to Unlearn: Research Strategies.

Now use one of the following databases to demonstrate your knowledge of the 5 basic information literacy concepts. Remember, you are using one of the 5 activities chosen at the beginning of the semester to demonstrate your knowledge of the 5 basic information literacy concepts.. The following are the databases I recommend you use:

  1. Academic Search Complete (Links to an external site.) for the Hierarchical Reference activity.
  2. CREDO (Links to an external site.) Reference for the Mind Mapping activity.
  3. Literature Criticism Online (Links to an external site.) for the Topic Finder activity.
  4. Advanced Google (Links to an external site.) for the Building an Algorithm activity.
  5. Any one of the 66 databases found from the Schauerman Library’s A-Z Databases (Links to an external site.) list. Look to the right of the A-Z list at the most popular databases this might help you choose a database or read through each description of each database this might help you identify your favorite database to use in demonstrating your activity.

Now choose a modality to which you will submit your final project. You must inform the instructor 1 month prior to Finals Week which modality you will use. Here are the modalities to choose:

  1. Video presentation demonstrating your knowledge of the 5 basic information literacy concepts that includes the chosen activity used with screen shots of the process taken in the database.
  2. Written outline demonstrating your knowledge of the 5 basic information literacy concepts that includes the chosen activity used with screen shots of the process taken in the database.
  3. Live presentation demonstrating your knowledge of the 5 basic information literacy concepts that includes the chosen activity used with screen shots of the process taken in the database. For this modality, you must set an appointment with the instructor a month in advance for a time slot during finals week. You must provide 48 hours advance notice in writing to the instructor if you need to change the date and time. Emergencies will be accommodated!

Grading Criteria:

You will receive 25 points if you include all 5 basic information literacy concepts in your final project. You will lose 5 points for each basic concept left out of your final project. You are welcome to meet with me and provide an overview of your final project for instructor’s feedback. If you choose to meet with me you must schedule a preview meeting day and time during the second to the last week of the course semester (Seventh week of class). See rubric within week eight module for Final Project.

Submitting your Assignment:  When in the Final Project section of week eight module you will see how to submit your assignment.

Q&A

The weekly Q&A assignments are located within each module. See each module for details.

Information Literacy Activity:

“Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.”

An information literate individual is able to:

  • Determine the extent of information needed.
  • Access the needed information effectively and efficiently.
  • Evaluate information and its sources critically.
  • Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base.
  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
  • Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally.

(Information literacy competency standardsLinks to an external site., 2000)

Information Literacy Activities can help the student Actualize the concepts of an information literate person and provide a foundation in information literacy. I have created several information literacy activities with points assigned. These activities are listed in the last module of this course. You are to choose one information literacy activity to turn in as your required assignments. See each information literacy activity for detailed instructions and more information. Here are the titles of the information literacy activities,

  1. Hierarchical Reference.
  2. Mind Mapping.
  3. Topic Finder.
  4. Information Tracking Graph.
  5. Research Strategies: Learning to Unlearn.

Weekly Video Tutorials

Each week you will find at the top of each module a short to moderate in length video that I will create. These videos will walk you through each module and provide a basic over sight of the module and what to expect. Also, throughout the semester I may add tutorial videos on "How To". You will start with module one and two (1) the welcome video and (2) the information literacy video.
