Hi all! Welcome to English 1AS – Reading and Composition

My name is Jocelyn Shaw and I will be your instructor for this course. This picture on this page is from what feels like a different world! While I miss being on our beautiful El Camino Campus, I really appreciate the flexibility that online learning provides and I am so happy you are here and I get to spend this semester with you.

Course Overview

This course is designed to strengthen your ability to read with understanding and discernment, to discuss assigned readings intelligently, and to write clearly. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to write an essay in which each paragraph relates to a controlling idea, has an introduction and conclusion, and contains primary and secondary support. College-level reading material will be assigned to provide the stimulus for class discussion and writing assignments, including a required research paper.

Get Started

I am so looking forward to getting into all these ideas deeper with you over the next 16 weeks. Please start with this Introduction to Canvas for ECC students. It is a quick walkthrough of Canvas with some quizzes to complete. If you are new to Canvas, it is designed to get you familiar with the platform. If you have used Canvas before, it will be a nice review!

After that you can jump right into the Modules!
