INTRODUCTION TO LIBRARY INFORMATION SCIENCE

Catalog Description: This course acquaints students with the types and organization of libraries and their resources, enabling them to develop strategies for library research. Students will learn how to locate and evaluate traditional and electronic types of library materials; how to document resources; and how to prepare a bibliography. Students will also acquire proficiency in the use of informational technology in order to understand the full potential of library resources.

 

Student Learning Outcomes:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. effectively find, analyze, and synthesize information
  2. use an online catalog to find books
  3. have a basic understanding of the Library of Congress classification system
  4. effectively utilize online databases to find reliable and useful periodical articles
  5. utilize various search strategies and evaluate Web resources on the Internet
  6. prepare a basic bibliography
  7. utilize the skills learned in this class to succeed in future educational & career tracks

 

Student Learning Outcomes Assessment: will be by way of pre-testing, assignments, class participation, self /class assessment essay, and final exam.

 

Students will be able to access class information – lecture notes, assignments, readings, etc., online, by way of an online class management system, Etudes, which is supported by El Camino College. 

 

Recommended text: Lenberg, J. Facts on File Guide to Research. 2nd ed. 2010.

Materials: Library card/ID required.

                 

Breakdown of Grading: Total = 100 points =Your Final Grade

  1. Book Catalog assignment – MLA style and annotation: 10 points
  2. Periodical assignment  : 10 points
  3. Web assignment : 10 points
  4. MLA Assignment : 10 points
  5. Class participation in Discussions: 10 points
  6. Final exam: 50 points

An extra-credit assignment may be available.                                             

 

Grading Scale:  90-100 = A;    80-89 = B;    70-79 = C;    60-69 = D;   Below 60 = F

Grades:  A letter grade is given for this class.

1.All due dates for assignments are firm dates.  Late assignments will receive a grade reduction.

                                                SEMESTER SCHEDULE

Lesson 1. Welcome. Introduction & overview of class, including explanation of course requirements, and assignments. Discussion of the meaning of “information competency” and its application to the course. Student Learning Outcomes.  

 

Lesson 2. Library history. Book catalog. Reference books & citations. MLA Citation style introduction. Book Catalog pre- and post – test.

 Assignment 1: Choose a book from the ECC library catalog on a chosen topic. Prepare a citation in MLA style and a basic annotation. – due Feb 22nd 

 

Lesson 3. Introduction to Periodicals. Periodical & newspaper types. Locating periodicals. SLO Periodicals pre-test, with post- test to be administered in week 5.

 

Lesson 4. Using paper indexes & online general periodical/news databases to find articles.

Assignment 2: Choose one article from either the EbscoHost MFP or one article from the ProQuest database on your chosen topic. E-mail articles to instructor by next class session, including an MLA citation and annotation. Due March 2nd 

 

Lesson 5. Specialized online databases, including literary criticism & controversial topics. Use of computer lab for hands-on periodical searching. MLA citation style.

Assignment 3: Find an example of a good and bad Web site on your chosen topic. Document these examples and explain the reasons for your evaluation, use the “good” example for your annotated bibliography. – Due March 17th 

 

Lesson 6. Internet searching & search tools.

 

Lesson 7. Internet searching/Search tools contd. Web site evaluation. Exam Review.

 

Lesson 8. Final exam.

 

Grades: A letter grade is given for this class.
